Exhibit: Vermont Photo Space Gallery

We're excited to announce that Judd and I were each accepted for a spot in the Vermont Photo Space Gallery Wedding Story exhibition. The exhibit was juried by Cliff Mautner, one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world. The opening night is next Monday, June 14 with an opening reception at 6pm at the gallery in Essex Junction. Come check it out if you're in or around Burlington!

Six ways to help your wedding photographer help you

In our years of shooting weddings, we've noticed a few things that couples can do which, easily remedied, help make for even more amazing pictures. Help us help you by following some of these easy tips!

1. Pick locations with lots of natural light.
Consider each location where photos will be taken – the room you're getting ready in, the ceremony spot, cocktail and reception areas – and how much natural light is available at each one. As photojournalists, we love abundant available light and try to use our flashes as little as possible! While we are excellent at simulating natural light and adapting to all kinds of lighting conditions, available light really is the best thing for your photos.

2. Choose a nice hanger for your dress.
When you pick up your dress, chances are it will come on a cardboard bust to help hold its shape, or a cheapish looking plastic hanger. We want to take a lovely photo of your dress before you put it on, and picking out a nice wood, bamboo, sateen or silk-wrapped hanger will be a huge help.

3. Make a list of formals beforehand.
Typically, our couples choose us because we capture great moments and don't focus on posed pictures, but most people want at least a short formals session. While we don't work off lists when we're shooting, having a list of the different groups of people you want for the formals will be a great relief – it will save you from worrying whether you missed aunts and uncles or got the right combinations of people in your pictures.

4. Designate a wingman (or woman) to help organize formals.
We try to get through formals in an efficient, speedy manner so that you can get back to your party! One thing that helps is to enlist someone you know well, who knows your family and friends – say a bridesmaid, sister, or good friend – to help gather people together for formals. It can be hard to get people's attention once they have a drink and a hors d'oeuvre in each hand, so having someone there that knows everyone's names, is a natural leader and organizer, and maybe even has a nice loud voice, can make it easier to lure people over to the formals spot.

5. Let's get to know each other before the wedding.
The better we get to know you before the big day, the easier it will be for us to pick up on the little things that make your images more meaningful. Do you have an aunt who's attending that's extra special to you? Will your bouquet be wrapped in your grandmother's handkerchief? Did you put lots of time and energy into creating the centerpieces yourself? We often don't get to meet our couples in person before the wedding, but if you have the time, try to schedule a meeting with us either a few months before, the week before the wedding, or whenever you happen to be in the area. If not, a phone call works as well.

6. Relax, kick back, and have fun!
Relaxed brides make for the best photos – really. So kick back, enjoy the company of your loved ones, and have a great time. It's your wedding, after all!

Groom a la chef

I was excited to stumble across a Seven Days mention of one of our grooms, Michael Clauss, who also happens to be the Daily Planet's head chef. We're shooting Michael and Alexa's wedding on June 12 at a private residence in Burlington.

Coming up May 14-20 is Vermont Restaurant Week – tons of local restaurants will be serving up prix fixe menus with mouth-watering dishes at unbelievable prices. Be sure to check out Michael's specially created menu for the Daily Planet that week - the options include spring vegetable torte with ramps and yellow fig and vanilla custard.

One of my favorite tidbits from a Seven Days article on Michael earlier this year is the mention of how he "moved to Vermont from New York for the 'love of [his] life,' fiancée Alexa." Adorable! We can't wait to shoot their wedding in just a few weeks.

Spring has Sprung!

Apologies for the long absence, it has been a busy booking season and I know this page has been sorely neglected. I recently got a blogging kickstart at the Vermont Association of Wedding Professionals social media seminar yesterday at Sugarbush. I thought I knew enough about blogging, twittering and Facebook but left there with dizzying amounts of information, thanks to Carey Earle of Green Apple Marketing.

Help-Portrait Event

I just wanted to share something that I've been organizing for this weekend - on Saturday, December 12, myself and several other photographers are donating free portrait sessions to people in need in the Burlington area. This is part of an initiative taking place all over the world on Saturday.

Help-Portrait, just to give you an idea, currently has around 1,700 photographers involved in over 260 different locations, including more than 40 different countries.

So sorry for the long absence. It's been our busiest wedding season ever and being a solo blogger while editing thousands of pictures a week is a challenge! We wrapped up our last October weddings a week or two ago and are breathing a collective sigh of relief.

I was excited to see my photo in this month's issue of BRIDES magazine. I mentioned a few months ago that I won first place in the ceremony category of the 2008 WPJA/BRIDES contest. Well, here it is. The placement of the photo is not stellar (note that the dress, the focus of the image, is in the gutter) but oh well. I'm still pretty thrilled! Also check it out online on the BRIDES site and on the WPJA site.

The image is from Renée and Jason's wedding at the Pruyn House in Newtonville, New York last year on June 28. Renée got her vintage pink dress from Etsy.

BRIDES/WPJA Contest Win!

So, I thought I'd be able to sit on this one until it was published in the fall, but I'm bursting with the news. I recently found out that I won the Ceremony category of the latest BRIDES/WPJA contest! The photo will be featured on the BRIDES and WPJA sites, as well as published in the November/December issue of BRIDES.

The winning image is from Renée and Jason's wedding at the Pruyn House in Newtonville, New York last year on June 28. Renée found her vintage pink dress on Etsy, and told me that the shoes actually cost more than the dress itself. Renée and Jason's one-year anniversary was just a couple of weeks ago - Congratulations to you both!

Remaining dates for 2009

It's been a busy season so far and we have just a small handful of dates left open - these are August 29, September 5, October 10 and October 17. We've had several inquiries but not yet booked anyone on these days. Mention this post when you book and we'll give you a free web gallery as well as a 5% discount on your hourly coverage! This little bit of news from the BBC caught my eye this morning. I'm sure there's a lesson to be learned here somewhere. To avoid elaborate bouquet tosses, maybe?

FAQ

A quick note: we have added a sorely needed FAQ to our About section on the site. We feel this will save us some time answering basic questions about our services, while allowing more time to discuss the specific needs of clients.

Introducing Wild Magnolia and Willow Album Design

Recently we started working with a new album maker, Rebecca Shostak, who is based out in Santa Monica, California and founded Wild Magnolia Design last year. Becca is unique in that she only offers albums made of recycled and environmentally sustainable materials. Her books are gorgeous, handmade works of art and to top it off they have a very fair price tag. We've been searching for a long time for someone who fits all of these criteria and are delighted to have found Becca! Check out her work here and her unique philosophy here.

For the actual layout, we'll be using Britney Gardner of Willow Album Design. We love her clean, elegant designs and feel that they'll beautifully showcase our documentary shooting style.

Not only are Becca and Britney awesome at what they do, entrusting the album design process to them leaves us time to do what we do best: photographing and photo editing. We are delighted to have found these two wonderfully talented people and we will have a sample album to show off in the near future!

Same-Sex Marriage in Vermont

Because we do a fair amount of business in Vermont, we thought it worth reporting that same sex marriage passed in the Montpelier statehouse as of a few minutes ago. Congratulations to all the happy LGBT couples out there!

In other news, we have a second 5D Mark II now and are gearing up for a busy wedding season! More to follow in the next few days.

New 5D Mark II

This week we received our brand new Canon 5D Mark II! We've had our current camera bodies for three years and it was high time for an upgrade. We're getting a second one in the next couple of months; we could only nab one right now due to an extremely high demand. Many thanks to Green Mountain Camera for their competitive pricing and John Ste. Marie for hanging onto this for us!
